Overwater or Beach Villa: How to Choose

Home · Journal · Maldives

The overwater villa is the image everyone arrives with. It is not always the right room. A short, honest guide.

An overwater villa earns its reputation: steps into the lagoon, uninterrupted horizons, and a sense of floating that nowhere on land quite matches. It suits couples, strong swimmers and anyone who wants the water at their door. The trade-offs are worth knowing — they tend to be warmer in the afternoon sun, less private from passing boats, and rarely ideal for young children.

When the beach is the better room

A beach villa puts you on soft sand with direct, unfenced ocean access, often a private pool, and shade from palms through the hottest hours. Families gravitate here, as do guests who value a garden and a gentler entry into the water. On many islands the best beach villas sit on a quiet stretch with a house reef a few fins away.

The case for both

A growing number of guests split a longer stay — beach first to settle, overwater to finish — and find it the best of the archipelago. We know which villa categories on each island genuinely deliver privacy, reef access and afternoon shade, rather than simply the highest tariff.
